As of last week, construction is officially underway on the Texas Beach pedestrian bridge. Public access to the riverside stretch was closed off three years ago following a failed bridge safety inspection. Now, a new walkway is finally in the works, and we’ll keep an eye out for timeline updates.

Richmond Metro Zoo welcomed six cheetah cubs to its animal kingdom. Born in May, the litter stayed at the Cheetah Conservation Center for three months, but now live in the public habitat with their parents, Zuri and Ramses. (12 On Your Side)

Did you vote to help name Maymont’s new baby porcupine? If not, don’t miss your chance; it’s imperative. As of yesterday, the poll leaderboard showed Prickles with a 28.9% lead, and Barb following closely behind at 25.8%. The winning name will be announced on Saturday, Sept. 6.
Biz
Local antiques dealer Mid Century Morris plans to relocate from its current Scott’s Addition home to a larger, more industrial space just five minutes away. Formerly a train repair facility, the new location will allow owner Janet Morris to display thousands of antiques and furniture pieces under one roof. The biz aims for a winter opening. You may have noticed my note in today’s city department guide — I miss Texas Beach. Learning that we’re one step closer to getting back to our gritty river “beach” made for a hopeful addition to my day.
In light of this progress, the North Bank Trail has been rerouted to avoid the construction area, but Texas Beach remains inaccessible for the foreseeable future.
