October is officially underway, and the leaves will start falling before you can say “American Dogwood.” In anticipation of the falling foliage, the city will kick off its leaf pickup services on Monday, October 6.
Curbside leaf collection
Bagged leaves will be collected curbside along with your trash. Up to six bags can be set out at a time, and biodegradable bags are preferred. Need to dispose of more than six bags? Select weeks in November and December will allot for unlimited bag pickups across four city sectors. Use the color-coded map to identify your sector and trash collection day.
Yom Kippur begins at sundown today, Oct. 1, marking the beginning of the Day of Atonement. Observe the holiday by finding local services + programming in the coming days.
Development
Henrico County Schools broke ground on The Living Building at Wilton, a K-12 public school “living building.” Scheduled to open in the fall of 2026, this Varina development is situated on 62 acres of Wilton Farmland and prioritizes a focus on Environmental Studies and Sustainability.
Open
Roseshire Gaming Parlor opened its doors at Staples Mill Shopping Center on Monday, Sept. 29. The morning of its opening was met with a line wrapped around the building, as well as continued conversations of controversy. See a few reactions locals had to the grand opening. (12 On Your Side)
Announced
The weigh-in results are in for the most monstrous pumpkin at the State Fair of Virginia. The 2025 champ, hailing from Broomall, PA, set a site record of 1,983 pounds. A Virginia-grown pumpkin earned the second-place title (and Prettiest Pumpkin Award), settling in at 1,507 pounds. Take a trip to see for yourself.
Coming Soon
West Broad is getting a little more aquatic. Opening in the next few months, Kole Tang Aquatics in Dumbarton will specialize in the installation and servicing of aquariums. Is it just me, or does this sound like the ultimate side gig in an indie coming-of-age movie? (Richmond BizSense)
