Autumn officially began on September 22, and leaves will be falling before you can say “American Dogwood.” In anticipation of the falling foliage, the city will kick off its leaf pickup services on Monday, October 6.

Curbside leaf collection

Bagged leaves will be collected curbside along with your trash. Up to six bags can be set out at a time, and biodegradable bags are preferred.

Need to dispose of more than six bags? Select weeks in November and December will allot for unlimited bag pickups across four city sectors. Use the color-coded map to identify your sector and trash collection day.

  • Wednesday trash collections: Nov. 7-15
  • Thursday trash collections: Nov. 21-29
  • Monday trash collections: Dec. 5-13
  • Tuesday trash collections: Dec. 19-27

Alternative options

Starting on Monday, Nov. 3, residents can also request a $30 vacuum option for leaf pickup. Requests can be made online, or by calling 311.

If you’d rather take care of your leaves yourself, a compost bin can be purchased from Public Works. The city also offers three free drop-off centers on East Richmond Road, Maury Street, and North Hopkins Road.

Henrico, Hanover + Chesterfield

Vacuum leaf collection in Henrico will resume on Monday, Oct. 27. In Hanover, unbagged leaves are accepted year-round at the Mechanicsville Courthouse and Elmont Convenience Centers, as well as the Route 301 Transfer Station. Chesterfield has not yet released plans for county-wide leaf collection.
