Gas prices have surged past the $4 mark in Richmond and elsewhere nationally. According to AAA, Richmond’s average retail price reached $4.19 as of yesterday, April 7.

With that in mind, we set out to find local deals that cost less than gas right now.

Whether you find joy in the occasional patio drink, a night spent at the hot dog bar, or an enchanted stroll to buy Saran-Wrapped deviled eggs, you deserve to treat yourself (while saving some change along the way).

Cheaper than a gallon of gas...

Lombardy Market in the Fan supplies Richmonders with ~$2 deviled eggs and ~$3.50 slices of cake or pie.

To elevate your savings, indulge in a lineup of $1 oysters from Lillian, available during happy hour, daily from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Another happy hour pick — Reader Rebekah F. recommends grabbing $3 wine and beer at Garnett’s, daily from 4 to 6 p.m.

News Notes

Development

Sold, and the former Greyhound station near CarMax Park goes to a New York investment group for $14.9 million. Proposals foresee a total transformation — apartments, retail spaces, garage parking, and 50,000 sqft of additional amenities and outdoor areas. Construction could begin later this year. (CBS 6)

Announced

Pull the lever, Kronk. Water is once again flowing into the west tank of the Byrd Park Reservoir, following a ceremonial turning of the valve earlier this week. The city closed the reservoir tank, one of two, for rehabilitation back in 2023. Repairs on the east tank will begin next. (The Richmonder)

Speaking of early voting, Chesterfield County will open a second location for early voters at the North Courthouse Road Library, beginning this Friday, April 10. The county’s first location is open now at the Central Library. Absentee voting is also underway in Henrico County, active at three in-person locations. (WRIC)

The Buy

The Buy Editor Emily here. Meet my dog Meredith. Like so many incredible pups, she’s a rescue.

Until recently, I didn’t know much about her breed, or how to best care for her. Thanks to Embark’s Breed + Health Dog DNA Test, that’s all changed. I’ve learned Meredith is a mix of American Pit Bull, Australian Cattle Dog, Dalmatian, and that she may be at higher risk for Intervertebral Disc Disease. Now I can take proactive steps to support her health — like keeping her on a balanced diet and opting for a harness over a collar to help reduce strain on her spine.

Try Embark for your dog, discover their unique DNA, and give them the best possible care.
