Dining among legends
Millie’s Diner circa 1989. | Photo provided
At Richmond’s oldest restaurants, fresh fare and old-school eats go hand in hand. We spotlighted some of the culinary legacies that have been operating in the city for decades.
Millie’s has been spicing up Richmond since 1989, when they opened near Church Hill.
Menu signature: The Devil’s Mess — a frittata with spicy sausage, onions, green peppers, garlic, tomatoes, and mild curry — has been a favorite on the menu since opening day.
This Carytown restaurant first opened in 1929 and moved to its current location in 1934.
Menu signature: Although the deli counter has been replaced with a bar, New York Deli still serves the classic sailor sandwich — pastrami, swiss, grilled knockwurst, and spicy mustard on toasted rye.

Built in 1989 and designed “in the Frank Lloyd Wright tradition,” this nature-infused home just hit the market in western Henrico. We could lead with the outdoor pool or the original slate floors, but it’s really the kitchen that sold it for us. Take a look at the rest of the house.

Ranked
Virginia clocked in at No. 9 on a new WalletHub ranking of the best states for working from home. The report weighed factors like internet costs, home size, and cybersecurity, but we’d argue there’s one more metric that matters: great remote work spots. Luckily, Richmond delivers.
Try This
Grab your phone and get outside. Richmond is participating in this year’s City Nature Challenge, a global bioblitz kicking off on Friday, April 24. Locals can join in by snapping photos of wild plants and animals, then uploading their observations to help document biodiversity.

It’s National Pickleball Month, and you don’t want to find yourself in a pickle without a place to test your skills. Whether you’re new to the sport or chasing your next open play session, head to one (or all) of these local courts.

Support a powerful cause: Virginia Physicians for Women is hosting a period supplies drive benefiting Sylvia’s Sisters, helping fight period poverty. I didn’t know much about her breed, or how to best care for her. Thanks to Embark’s Breed + Health Dog DNA Test, that’s all changed. I’ve learned Meredith is a mix of American Pit Bull, Australian Cattle Dog, Dalmatian, and that she may be at higher risk for Intervertebral Disc Disease. Now I can take proactive steps to support her health — like keeping her on a balanced diet and opting for a harness over a collar to help reduce strain on her spine.
Try Embark for your dog, discover their unique DNA, and give them the best possible care.
