JOANN closed its doors last week, but what about the Richmonders half-way through crochet projects?

Last week, JOANN Fabric and Crafts announced a company-wide closure, leaving many crafters with hearts, unstitched. After 80 years of operation, JOANN was a wonderland for generations of seamsters, scrapbookers, sequiners, and more. Richmonders – have we got the new spot for you?

Enter: SCRAP RVA.

A few patrons can be seen between tables, shelves, and displays full of crafting supplies at SCRAP RVA.

Located in Brookland Park, SCRAP is a unique version of a crafting wonderland, hoping to inspire new generations of creatives in Richmond.

With roots tracing back to 2010, SCRAP is a donation-run craft and recycled-material store — and a Type-B crafter’s dream. Shelves never look the same, prices vary with each item, and you never know what DIY materials you will walk out with. It’s… scrappy, if that’s not too on-the-nose to suggest. If you embrace the spontaneity, SCRAP has the potential to inspire you with every shelf-sweep.

Everything in SCRAP — down to each colorful button — has been recycled from within the community, adding a bit of sentiment to the experience and perhaps for some, nodding to the generational legacy that JOANN established after so many years. SCRAP brings an idea to the forefront: Crafting is about community.

In addition to their brick-and-mortar, SCRAP runs regular workshops and social gatherings for crafters of all ages.

Type-A crafters, we see you, and we’ve sewn together a few more local options:
