There are two places to get a fresh, local bagel within city limits: Nates and Chewys. We can’t pick a favorite — and you don’t have to.

For this celebration of all things River City bagels, we’re boiling down the two spots based on reader recommendations and each of their specific strengths.

🥯 Nate’s Bagels , 21 S. Allen Ave.

Strengths: Sandwich options, take-away service, open earlier

If you want a hearty bagel, Nate’s has a ton of signature sandwiches. Particularly if there are carnivores in your crew, the Fan spot has more protein options. They’ve also got a streamlined order ahead system in addition to in-person service.

Editors Pick: The Breakfast Banh Mi on a whole wheat bagel is a must-try.

🥯 Chewy’s Bagels , 3138 W. Cary St.

Strengths: Toasting, delivery around town, cream cheese display

Chewy’s toasts its bagels and for some, that’s a deal-breaker. You can also find them around Richmond, at local grocery stores + select cafes . Plus, the shop’s homemade spreads are quite tempting.

Editors Pick: Start the day with the Garden Veggie sandwich on an everything bagel.

Readers shouted out both spots for their schmear selection, and several praised third-party candidate Cupertino’s , located in Henrico County.

When it comes to a winner in our bagel battle, we have to agree with Reader Michelle U., who wrote: “Geez, why don’t you just ask me to choose my favorite child!”
