You don’t need to drive all the way to Virginia Beach to bask by the water. Beat the summer heat with these activities.

A dip in the James River

Head to the heart of River City to swim or relax by the James. Enjoy swimming out to the rocks at Pony Pasture or setting up a hammock at Texas Beach to lounge between swims. Work up a sweat walking the catwalk along the pipeline, then jump into the water to refresh.

Pro tip: Be sure to check river conditions before heading out.

Rafting

Zoom down the James’s whitewater rapids or take a lazy river approach with one of Riverside Outfitters’ many rafting trips. Pick from a variety of trips for different ages + thrill levels in different parts of the river. Be sure to bring a raincoat — you’ll be in the splash zone.

Cobblestones Water Park

A local water park with a huge pool and waterslides? Sign us up. Cobblestones Water Park is $17 for a whole day of fun or $80 for unlimited slides and splashes all season long.

Dog at Boat Lake

Boat Lake

Take a walk around Byrd Park and stop to take out a paddle boat. Steer under the lake’s fountain to cool down.

Swim lessons

Sign up for swim lessons through the Dept. of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities. If you already know how to swim, head to one of these pools for a cannonball contest with your crew.

Treat yourself

Grab a cold treat from a local ice cream shop or try something new — Suzy Sno snowballs, anyone? — and take a sunset stroll.

No matter which of these activities you choose, you’re sure to be swimming in good times and tan lines. ☀️
