Public transportation in Richmond is totally free for GRTC riders, and locals want to keep it that way, but there’s still a cost to free service — an annual $6.8 million, sourced from grants, donations, and advertising.

In celebration of the contributors who help keep zero-fare transit possible, as well as this year’s record-breaking ~12 million rides, GRTC is rolling out TAP Into Transit Week, Monday, Oct. 20, through Friday, Oct. 24.

Here’s how you can participate, whether you’re able to donate or not:

Give Day: If you’re a rider, consider a one-day donation of $5 on Tuesday, Oct. 21. You can donate online at the TAP Into Transit Week page, linked above.

Transit Challenge: Sometime this week, swap out one of your regular commutes with GRTC public transportation. Consider bringing a friend or two along for more community connection.

Stay informed: Familiarize yourself with upcoming project plans and feedback opportunities, such as online surveys and community meetings. Your voice matters when it comes to green-lighting or red-lighting change.
