Coming up next week, VCU professor Sasha Waters will premiere a groundbreaking documentary about the life and legacy of American poet Mary Oliver, titled “Saved by the Beauty of the World.”

The film will feature poetry readings by famous celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Helena Bonham Carter, Steve Buscemi, Stephen Colbert, and native Richmonder Lucy Dacus.

“There’s a public image of Mary Oliver as being almost saintly, and she’s not,” Sasha Waters said in an interview with VCUarts. “She was very human and very much in the world. She had her struggles, like everyone does. The film is a portrait of her whole life.”

“Saved by the Beauty of the World” will make its Richmond debut next week at the 32nd James River Film Festival. The film will also air on PBS American Masters this summer.

Attend the Richmond premiere:

Friday, April 3 | 8 p.m. | Grace Street Theater | $7 | Tickets

Note: Studio Two Three will host another screening later this spring — date to be announced.
