There’s no better way to listen than live — and groovy tunes might sound the best at In Your Ear Studios.

The production company was founded in 1990 by Carlos Chafin and Robbin Thompson. Nine years later, they moved into their 18,000-square-foot recording + production facility in Shockoe Bottom.

Now, In Your Ear provides space + services for everything from dialogue production on major Hollywood films to recording a local radio spot. They also took advantage of their tech during the pandemic to bring live music on the air while in quarantine.

“Shockoe Sessions Live!” began in June 2020 as a weekly series. Local and regional bands come to the studio for an hour-long set, streamed for the masses via In Your Ear’s YouTube. With 80+ shows now under their belt, the SSL crew doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

Here’s the exciting part. With COVID-19 numbers going down, IYE is now welcoming a few lucky individuals to attend “Shockoe Sessions Live!” in person. These shows are not open to the public — this is an if you know, you know situation.

Shockoe Sessions Live is letting one RIC reader — and three pals — be part of the behind-the-scenes action at the Tues., April 26 show. That night is their celebration of the Poe Museum’s 100th Anniversary with special readings, featured artists, and Nordic folk jams.
