We asked our readers for their go-to River City donuts — here’s what they said.

Table of Contents

While it might not be the early-morning staple Richmond’s best-known for, the River City’s got several local donut shops to partake from.

Here’s our list — glaze upon it and wonder.

Country Style Donuts

After we put out the call for local donut recommendations, one think became abundantly clear: Our readers do not mess around about their love for Country Style Donuts.

Our inbox was flooded with Country Style fans — in fact, over 75% of our responses were shouting out the Williamsburg Road establishment.

The donut shop’s original location opened in the East End over half a century ago. In 2014, it expanded into a second location on West Broad Street.

City Editor David here: After much consideration — and, of course, plenty of sampling — I think I’m prepared to call Country Style’s vanilla crème donut my favorite of all time.

Westhampton Pastry Shop

Serving the West End for almost 75 years, Westhampton Pastry Shop is better known for its wedding cakes and seasonal treats, but their hefty, distinctive donuts are a definite standout.

Much like Country Style, Westhampton Pastry Shop has a deeply devoted fan base. In response to news of potential shakeups from the owners of the bakery’s shopping center, City Editor David recently overheard a fellow customer swear to chain herself to the front doors rather than let it be torn down. Now that’s brand loyalty.

Morr Donuts

Established in 2022, this Mechanicsville bakery is by far the youngest member of this list. However, reader Vanessa S. called Morr Donuts “hands down the best.” Taking a glance at the bakery’s handiwork, it’s not hard to see why.

Honorary mentions

Some other local spots that earned some love from our readers include Sugar Shack, Oh Mochi, and Donuts Company in North Chesterfield.

We know Richmond’s bound to have more than a half-dozen donut shops worth trying. Did we miss your favorite? Send it our way.
