Bring the whole family — or rediscover your inner child — at the Science Museum of Virginia’s 47th Annual Model Railroad Show. It’s tracking to have all the bells and whistles you could ever dream of.
From Friday, Nov. 29 to Sunday, Dec. 1, guests can marvel at model trains zipping through intricate displays, each carefully crafted by some of Virginia’s top hobbyists. Think: Unique setups featuring LEGO bricks, Star Wars, UFOs, and more.
This year, the Science Museum is pulling out all the stops with exciting new additions, including:
An interactive family train yard (where future engineers can play with a variety of train sets)
Blacksmith demos, showing how locomotive engine parts are made
Pro tip: To manage traffic flow, the Science Museum of Virginia is offering timed tickets for the Model Railroad Show. Reserve tickets online before the event to secure your preferred entry time.
Kabana Rooftop announced that it will close its doors on Jan. 1. The restaurant and bar, located on the 20th floor of Hilton’s Hampton Inn and Suites and Homewood Suites, opened in 2016.
Sports
More than 900 boxers will head to the Greater Richmond Convention Center next month for the 2024 USA Boxing National Championships. The competition kicks off Monday, Dec. 16 and continues through Saturday, Dec. 21. Tickets start at $10 and will be available at will call.
Civic
You have a little over a week to submit your ideas for the Richmond People’s Budget. Proposals for improving your neighborhood using city funds can be submitted online through Saturday, Nov. 30, or you can fill out a comment card at your local library branch through Wednesday, Nov. 27.
Development
Eight new homes are coming to Church Hill North along North 33rd Street. The construction will include replacing a set of six apartments which have been condemned by the city. Half of the new homes are planned to have three bedrooms, and the other half will have four. (Richmond BizSense)
Cause
The Puritan Cleaners Coats For Kids drive continues through the end of November. Drop off coats at any Puritan location. Donations will be cleaned and repaired before being taken to the Salvation Army.
Award
Veteran local photographer Scott Elmquist will receive the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Professional Journalists (Virginia Pro Chapter). Elmquist, currently the senior photographer for Style Weekly and VPM News, has been with Style since 1999. (Style Weekly)
