True or false? As seen in “National Treasure,” the early-2000s $100 bill depicts a clock set at 2:22. (Keep reading for the answer.) | Photos via National Archives + VMHC

Fact vs. fiction
For the American history buffs, self-appointed mythbusters, and wild-at-heart Nicolas Cage fans, you’re in for a well-researched treat.
On Friday, Dec. 19, the Virginia Museum of History and Culture will host a 6 p.m. screening of “National Treasure” with a few cerebral surprises. Staff historians will join the watch party to offer live commentary — fact versus fiction.
Which movie moments line up with the history books, and which history-class cameos tie back to the VMHC’s collections?
A few event details:
Commentators will pause the movie to discuss and occasionally fast-forward to trim the run-time.
Food and drinks will be available at the museum cafe.
Tickets include after-hours access to the museum’s special VA250th exhibit.
Tickets are $8-10 for youth and $10-12 for adults, depending on member status.

On This Day
50 years ago today, Dec. 17, Virginia closed the lower James River to fishing, a ban that lasted 13 years. The decision followed the Kepone environmental disaster, which revealed thousands of pounds of toxic industrial pollution. Jump to 2025, and reflect on the James’ latest “B” health rating.
Art
Receipts, game tickets, a letter to the tooth fairy, and a note reading “I’m sorry. I love you.” Henrico’s Libby Mill Library curated a forgotten bookmarks gallery, an homage to the tokens found between the pages of returned library books. Maybe your scrappy bookmark made it on the wall. If so, you’re welcome to retrieve it.
Civic
Governor Glenn Youngkin will present the 2026-2028 Biennial Budget this morning, Dec. 17, at 9:30 a.m. — tune in via livestream. Gov. Youngkin brought the conversation to Richmond earlier this week when he announced a $50 million investment proposal toward child welfare reform.
Edu
Since we’re talking numbers, how about $1.2 billion? That’s how much funding the Virginia Department of Education expects K-12 schools to require over the next two years. Here are a few factors boosting the spike: 6% teacher pay raises, more students needing extra support, and increased operational costs. (Virginia Mercury)
