Richmond topped the national outlet’s list of the best cities to visit.

In its first-ever ranking of the top US towns to visit, CNN gave Richmond the no. 1 spot. The River City finished ahead of other mid-sized metropolises like Providence, RI, Duluth, MN, and Knoxville, TN.

CNN’s headline proclaims that “this creative capital city deserves a lot more attention.” We couldn’t agree more, CNN.

The article goes on to cite Richmond’s “top-notch museums” and “intriguing neighborhoods” as reason for its selection, not to mention our high-caliber dining, bustling outdoor scene, and unique beverage culture.

Historic and beautiful neighborhoods like the Fan helped Richmond earn the top spot.

The article specifically highlights several local restaurants Lillie Pearl, Buttermilk and Honey, ML Steak, Kali Love, and the Mantu. It also name-drops local breweries Triple Crossing, Väsen, and the Veil, as well as local tearoom Floris and coffee shop Urban Hang Suite.

Besides the world-class food and drink Richmond has to offer, CNN speaks to the history exhibited across the city. Between historic sites like St. John’s Church and the Richmond Slave Trail, museums including the American Civil War Museum, VMFA, and Black History Museum and Cultural Center, and eye-catching neighborhoods like the Fan and Shockoe Bottom, the past is on full display in the River City.

CNN also shouts out outdoor havens like Lewis Ginter (above) and Maymont.

Richmond’s love of the outdoors was the last factor CNN cited. Organizations like Maymont and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, plus festivals, parks, trails, and sports teams mean there’s no reason to stay inside — unless you want to.

City Editor David here: One thing that CNN doesn’t bring up, but that I love about this city, is our coffee culture. Local roasters and seemingly endless coffee shops make this coffee lover’s heart swell with Richmond pride.
