The second annual RVA Sports Awards honored last year’s top moments in a ceremony at the Altria Theater over the weekend. Richmonders voted for nominees to recognize those who break down barriers on and off the field.
The ceremony was hosted by NFL quarterback Taylor Heinicke alongside local media personalities Kelli Lemon and Lane Casadonte. Here are the winning individuals, teams, and organizations:
Female Athlete of the Year
Lindsey Frank , a two sport athlete at UR, leads the Spiders in lacrosse and field hockey.
Male Athlete of the Year
Jada Byers , a sophomore running back for VUU football, was also a finalist for the NCAA DII College Football Player of the Year award.
Coach of the Year
The football team at Highland Springs has five state titles in the last nine seasons under Loren Johnson .
Team of the Year
Randolph Macon Men’s Basketball were 2022 DIII national champions and were honored as the year’s best team.
Moment of the Year
The Flying Squirrels securing their first playoff appearance since 2014 was heralded as the top moment. The Squirrels were crowned first-half champs for their division back in June.
Will Daniel accepts the award for Fan of the Year.

Fan of the Year
Will Daniel took home the prize for his avid fandom of both the Kickers and UR sports.
Community Champion Award
The ceremony honored Scott Schricker , a passionate athlete and community member who died in October. Called “the backbone of Sports Backers,” Schricker was the third employee to join the organization around its founding in 1991.
Power of Sport Award
Representatives from Angel City FC, an NWSL team from Los Angeles with majority female ownership, accepted the award .
Courage Story
Sportable , a local organization dedicated to making sports accessible, was celebrated for its commitment to the community.
