After two years of discussion, the Washington Football Team is now officially named the Washington Commanders. That name will soon decorate the team’s training camp facility on West Leigh Street. That got us thinking about Richmond’s future in football.

Could Richmond host an NFL team?

The answer right now is… it’s highly unlikely.

The River City has Washington’s training camp, but also has a strong minor league baseball team and USL League One soccer squad. We’re no stranger to pro sports.

According to a 2018 Richmond Times Dispatch article, the firm working to replace the Coliseum — Hunden Strategic Partners — said Richmond was a top four contender to host in any major sporting league, particularly the NFL. Hunden claimed Richmond is one of the top sports TV markets in the country.

Fun fact: The Richmond Raiders indoor football team also played at the Coliseum from 2010-2015. Four other indoor teams — the Roughriders, Speed, Bandits, and Revolution — had come and gone by 2018.

The last professional team based in our city was the Virginia Squires basketball team, part of the ABA. They played all over the state, including at the Coliseum, from 1970-1976.

Could Washington move to Virginia?

Just last month, the Washington Post reported that the Commanders could be moving into Northern Virginia within the next few years. Team leaders have met with the General Assembly several times, outlining construction of a massive facility with entertainment and retail additions.

That could soon become a reality once the Commanders’ contract with FedEx field ends in 2027.

There’s good news though, Richmond sports fans. The Richmond Kickers 30th season opener is April 2 vs. FC Tucson. The Flying Squirrels’ home opener vs. the Altoona Curve is April 12.

We’ve got one more question, and it’s for you. If a professional team did come to Richmond, what would you want the team to be called?
