Look inside the first-ever RPS auction

The RPS Education Foundation has kicked off a first-of-its-kind auction to support families and students in Richmond Public Schools. Over 75 items are up for bidding in the Celebrate RPS online auction.

The citywide auction is open now through Tuesday, May 28. To participate, simply register to bid and start clicking through items.

Items up for grabs include some enviable local experiences, products, and trips. Here are a few that caught our eye, at a variety of price points.

🍦 Food and drink

  • A master class from pitmaster and local legend Ronnie Logan of The Original Ronnie’s BBQ
  • A VIP experience for eight at The Emerald Lounge’s holiday pop-up, Sippin’ Santa
  • A 12-month Pint Club membership at Scoop, which will net you three artisanal pints per month and members-only merch

Created in 2001, the RPS Education Foundation supports the city’s public school system by fundraising from private contributions. It focuses on areas that are also priorities in the district’s strategic plan, including teacher recruitment and retention and Career and Technical Education initiatives.

Development
  • Richmond Flying Squirrels President Lou DiBella told the Times-Dispatch that “momentum has picked up” on the new ballpark. This comes after City Council approved a new financing model for the stadium. The Squirrels aim to play in the new park in 2026. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Festival
  • Mark your calendar for the Charged Up Fest — four days of events celebrating music, entrepreneurship, and artistic expression. The lineup includes a kickoff concert, community bike ride, pitch competition, and block party.
Drink
  • A new West Coast-style, cold IPA called Ripple Effect is now available at Ardent Craft Ales. The beer was created by Richmond’s chapter of the Pink Boots Society, an organization for women and non-binary people in the brewing industry. (Style Weekly)
Coming Soon
  • 7 Brew will open a location on Hull Street in early 2025. The drive-thru coffee chain plans to demolish the Ye Olde Car Wash and construct a new building on the site. (Richmond BizSense)
Sports
  • Sportable’s River City Slam Wheelchair Tennis Tournament — set for June 6-9 at Collegiate — will include appearances from five Team USA athletes. The competition is open to all levels and offers over $5,000 in prize money.
History
  • Reflect on the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision at a special event at the Black History Museum on Friday, May 17 at 11 a.m. The free lunch and learn program will include a documentary screening and community dialogue. Register to attend.
Kids
  • Lewis Ginter’s splash pad opens for the season today at 1 p.m. Kids of all abilities can play at Waterway on weekdays from 1 to 4 p.m. and weekends from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Hours will be extended for June-August.
Film
  • “Daughters,” a documentary co-directed by Angela Patton — CEO of local nonprofit Girls For A Change — will be released on Netflix on Aug. 14. The film won the Festival Favorite and US Documentary Audience Awards at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

⚽️ Ivy kick off inaugural season

Less than a year after announcing the return of pre-professional women’s soccer to the River City, Richmond Ivy SC will make its debut tomorrow at 6 p.m.

The team’s first test will be against Virginia Marauders FC out of Winchester. Gates open at 4:45 p.m. Plan to get there early — there are rally towels and temporary tattoos up for grabs for the first 500 and 1,000 fans, respectively.

Fans can also enjoy a $5 wine happy hour until kickoff and a selection of local food trucks throughout the match.

The Ivy will play six home and six away games before the inaugural season ends in late June.
