Richmond could see a snowy day or two this season.

We know the question on your mind, Richmonders — is it going to snow? Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center , we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in our city for December, January, and February.

While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what winter will bring.

Reminder: The first official day of winter is Thursday, Dec. 21.

Think warm. This winter, Richmond has a 33-40% chance of temperatures being higher than normal.

🌨️ Precipitation

Expect slightly above average precipitation. The Greater Richmond Region is right on the line between leaning above and likely above average probability, meaning we could see more snow and rainfall this season compared to last year.

Most of Virginia could see more precipitation than average this winter.

December

December temperatures in Richmond tend to fluctuate between 35.1° and 49.1°. Since it might be a little warmer than normal, don’t hold out for a snowy holiday season. The days will also be shorter, so get out in the sun if you can.

January

Expect it to be a bit more frigid in January. Historically the coldest month of the year, temperatures average between a low of 29.7° and a high of 44.6°. If we see significant snow this winter, it’ll likely be in January.

February

In February, temperatures generally stay around a low of 31.8° and a high of 49.3°. If you’ve already got your sun lamp out, you might be reassured to hear that by the end of February, the sun won’t set until 6 p.m. It’s the little things.
