Dock Street Park, the James River Park System’s newest addition, will open to the public on Saturday, June 15.

The city announced that it would acquire and turn the Dock Street property into a public park last year. The four-acre parcel along the James is itself a piece of Richmond’s history. It lies under Libby Hill, where, in 1737, William Byrd II looked out over the James and noticed how similar it looked to the stretch of the Thames River in Richmond, England — giving our city its name.

The park’s opening also represents another step towards opening a new stretch of the Virginia Capital Trail, currently on track to happen in July.

Dock Street Park will offer walking trails through lush native vegetation and direct access to the river. It’s adjacent to the James River Association’s new river education center, also slated to open this summer.
