When it’s past 5 o’ clock at the House of Usher —it’s time for Unhappy Hour. This delightfully dreary day returns to The Poe Museum Thurs., April 28, also marking the its 100th anniversary.
What does this Poe-tastic party include? This centennial celebration is showing off the style of 1920s Richmond. Guests are invited to wear flapper costumes, newsboy hats + striped suits to enjoy the libations, food trucks, and live music from 6-9 p.m. with an admission price of $10. (Psst… the best outfit earns a prize.)
Pro tip: If you’re sans-spats, check out Bygones Vintage Clothing (2916 W. Cary St.) in Carytown. They have a variety of party-perfect outfits + accessories from the 1920s-1970s.
It’s not all about the look, it’s about the (telltale) heart. Two months ago, we featured three artifacts of the 60 pieces donated to the museum for its centennial. Susan Jaffe Tane, who’s on the museum’s board of directors, an author + a literary collector, says her personal donation includes Poe’s engagement ring, pocket watch + part of his coffin.
After Thursday’s unveiling, these pieces will be on display at the museum for the remainder of the year. It’s open Tues.-Sat. from 10 a.m.-5 p.m + Sun. 11 a.m.-5 p.m at 1914 E. Main Street. Bonus: Keep your eyes peeled for Edgar and Pluto, the resident black cats on campus.
If you can’t wait until Thursday, Shockoe Sessions Live is hosting a Poe Centennial Celebration livestream with In Your Ears Studio tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. Musical guests feature Classical Revolution RVA with Chance Fischer, Elizabeth Wise + Wolvenwind.
Still not enough Poe for you? Unhappy Hours will continue every fourth Thursday from now through October.
